Involvement with the juvenile justice system can affect a youth’s employment, housing, and educational opportunities, leaving the young person with tremendous hurdles as they attempt to become successful adults. This webinar will provide tips on how to counsel youth clients on the collateral consequences of juvenile court and ways to mitigate its damaging effects. The challenges to the current youth sealing procedures, as well as recent changes to the sealing statutes, set to take effect on August 31, 2019, will be discussed. LB 354 seeks to streamline the automatic sealing process, and allows all youth the opportunity to seal their record so it does not present a barrier to their future success. The bill mandates automatic sealing of records upon satisfactory release from probation, and creates a clear path for any youth to seal their record, even if they were unsatisfactorily released from probation. Other changes in the bill, which is retroactive, simplifies the process and creates better notification so youth are aware of the opportunity for record sealing. This webinar will provide practical tips and tools, so attorneys can better advocate for their client’s future success.

Christine Henningsen - Christine Henningsen is Director of Nebraska Youth Advocates, a program at UNL’s Center on Children, Family and the Law (CCFL), which serves as a resource center for juvenile defense attorneys in Nebraska and research supporting best practices in juvenile justice policy. Prior to joining CCFL, Christine practiced five years as an Assistant Douglas County Public Defender, primarily in juvenile court. She is a certified trainer through the National Juvenile Defender Center and graduated summa cum laude from Creighton Law in 2003.
