Mentoring can play a critical role in your success as a lawyer and in helping your firm or organization attract, retain and develop diverse talent. This panel will discuss the value of mentoring in the legal profession, both for the mentor and mentee with some practical advice on how to make mentoring relationships successful. The session will also highlight a new mentoring program available through the Nebraska Legal Diversity Council.
Megan Belcher serves as Chief Legal & External Affairs Officer, and Corporate Secretary, leading Scoular's Legal, Brand Marketing & Corporate Communications, and sustainability and ESG functions. She is also a member of Scoular's Board of Directors. In her legal role, Megan leads the team of lawyers and legal professionals who manage all legal, compliance, and legal risk matters for the company. She also leads the governance and management work for the company’s Board of Directors and its initiatives and serves as the company’s Corporate Secretary. In her Brand Marketing & Corporate Communications leadership role, Megan leads the team of creative and communications professionals who support the company’s operations and service teams on the brand, marketing, internal and external communications, and public relations work, leading the strategy for the same in partnership with business partners.
Amy Lawrenson, Baird Holm, LLP
Shawntal M. Mallory is a native of Omaha, Nebraska. She was educated at Creighton University and Creighton University School of Law where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and her Juris Doctor, respectively. A licensed attorney, over the course of her fifteen-year practice, she has specialized in adoption, juvenile, family, and employment law while serving in nonprofit executive positions as general counsel and in human resources. Recently, she became Executive Director of the Nebraska Legal Diversity Council, a newly formed nonprofit organization aiming to increase and support diversity in the practice of law and law school matriculation in Nebraska. Mallory also serves as an adjunct Law Professor at Creighton Law School teaching a Race & Law course she developed. A featured speaker, trainer, coach and consultant on issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, justice and belonging, Mallory is certified in Nonprofit Executive Leadership and Leading Equity & Inclusion in Organizations through Northwestern University.
Sherman P. Willis is a State Farm Agent in northwest Omaha. He also is an instructor at Metropolitan Community College and an adjunct professor of law at Creighton University School of Law. Prior to serving in these roles, Mr. Willis was in-house counsel for Liberty Mutual Group and worked in its Omaha legal office. Previously, he was an associate with Fraser Stryker PC LLO and a summer associate with Kutak Rock LLP. He began his career as a federal judicial law clerk. Mr. Willis received his Bachelor of Arts degree from of Grinnell College and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Iowa, where he was senior managing editor of the Iowa Law Review. Mr. Willis has insurance, law, securities, and mortgage licenses in Nebraska and Iowa. He has also earned the Retirement Income Certified Professional designation and is pursuing the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy designation.
