There are many complex issues that arise when representing youth who do not have permanent status in the United States. This presentation will address the special considerations for undocumented youth clients and how a guardian ad litem is specially situated to help their client achieve permanency and access benefits to improve quality of life.

Anne Wurth is a Senior Attorney at the Immigrant Legal Center.  As a senior attorney, Anne provides direct representation to clients who may qualify for a form of immigration relief, including immigrant children who are in the juvenile justice system.  Anne manages ILC’s Pro Bono Program coordinating attorneys from the private bar who want to volunteer their time with our non-profit law firm.  Anne graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and English and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law. While in law school, Anne clerked with the non-profit law firm Nebraska Appleseed and worked as a student attorney in the Children’s Justice Clinic, working on a variety of issues of law primarily affecting immigrants and children within the Nebraska community.

Roxana Cortés-Mills is the Associate Legal Director at Immigrant Legal Center. She manages a team of attorneys, DOJ-accredited representatives, and paralegals across ILC’s offices statewide. Roxana specializes in cases involving immigrant children and their families. She appears before Nebraska state courts and the Omaha Immigration Court, most notably winning two appeals before the Nebraska Supreme Court. Roxana graduated magna cum laude from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with majors in Psychology, Latino/Latin American Studies, and Spanish. Roxana earned her J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law. During her 3L year at Nebraska Law, she served as a Senior Certified Law Student in the law school’s immigration clinic. Her representation of immigrants through that clinic led her to receive the Pat Gies Memorial Award. She teaches immigration law courses as an adjunct professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Metropolitan Community College. She is fluent in Spanish. When not teaching, Roxana loves to spend time with her husband, her cat, and her family. She also loves to cook and garden.
