Part 1: Building Character Through the Art of Advocacy
Managing your mind is a crucial skill to have in order to be able to maintain focus when it matters and find the silver lining in failure. This talk will discuss ways of framing thoughts in your own mind as you approach obstacles as newer attorneys. This will help attorneys in managing ego, with concentrating on the process vs. the outcome, and embracing failure and loss when it inevitably happens.
Part 2: Advocacy in Action: State v. Kofoed
This session will use the skills learned in the prior hour with Clarence Mock and apply those skills to the analysis of a real case, State v. Kofoed, 283 Neb. 767 (2012). We will begin with a short background of the case to familiarize the audience with the important facts then ask questions to help the audience see the real-world application of specific skills as a lawyer.
Clarence Mock is a 1977 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Law and former Burt County Attorney. He has served as past President of both the Nebraska Criminal Defense Attorneys Association and the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys. In 2003, he was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers. In recognition of his work as a criminal defense attorney, Mr. Mock was awarded the Don Fiedler Award. Mr. Mock is founder and President of Johnson & Mock, PC, LLO, which has offices located in Oakland and Omaha.
Caitlin Lovell is a 2018 graduate of Creighton University School of Law. Caitlin handles criminal law cases, such as sexual assault cases, vehicular manslaughter, DUI and Second Amendment issues, as well as family law cases.
