In this two-part presentation, experts in immigration representation and criminal defense will help us take a close look at the intersection between criminal and immigration law while representing noncitizens in Nebraska. Ethical considerations will be highlighted throughout the presentation as relevant. This formal presentation will be followed by a panel of four experts who will answer frequently asked questions by members of both, the criminal defense and immigration bar.

Kevin Ruser, UNL College of Law

Professor Kevin Ruser joined the Law College faculty in June, 1985, as a supervising attorney in the Civil Clinical Law Program. He received a B.A. from UNL in 1975, with an English major and a history minor. Professor Ruser attended UNL College of Law and received his J.D. in 1979. He worked for Western Nebraska Legal Services from 1979-1985; the first two years were spent in the Grand Island branch office, and the last four years were spent in the Scottsbluff office, where he was managing attorney. Professor Ruser is the Director of Clinical Programs at the College of Law and teaches in the Civil Clinic and the Immigration Clinic. He also co-administers the Litigation Skills Program of Concentrated Study.  He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Clinical Section of the Association of American Law Schools, and the Clinical Legal Educators Association. He is currently Co-Chair of the District Court Forms Subcommittee of the Nebraska Supreme Court Self-Represented Litigants Committee, a member of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission, a member of the Nebraska Supreme Court’s Civil Justice Reform Committee, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Office of Public Guardian.

Yvonne Sosa, Federal Public Defender’s Office

Yvonne Sosa is an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the District of Nebraska. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Trial Advocacy at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, College of Law. Ms. Sosa is the Board Chair of the newly formed Nebraska Legal Diversity Council and the, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Latino Center of the Midlands She has been an active member of the Nebraska State Bar Association since 2010, including serving on the Practice and Procedure Committee, Committee on Equity and Fairness, and Legal Services Committee. Ms. Sosa is a member of the Diversity, Women and the Law, Indian Law, Immigration Law, and Federal Law Sections. She graduated with the Fourteenth Class of the NSBA Leadership Academy. Ms. Sosa also serves the Nebraska Supreme Court as a member of the Access to Justice Commission. She received the 2017 Ten Outstanding Young Omahans Award, the 2019 NSBA Diversity Award, and the 2019 Fiestas Patrias Community Advocacy Award. During her free time she enjoys traveling, reading, and the company of her family.

Brian Blackford, Blackford Law LLC

Brian has dedicated his career to advocacy for the rights of immigrants in the courtroom and in the community. He is the managing partner and owner of Blackford Law LLC in Omaha, Nebraska which specializes in immigration law. His practice focuses on a variety of immigration cases in the areas of removal defense and “crimmigration,” family-based visa petitions, victim and juvenile visas, asylum, naturalization, and federal court litigation. Brian regularly gives immigration presentations at the Mexican Consulate, churches, schools, organizations, community forums, and continuing legal education seminars.

Kristin Mohrman, Koley Jessen

A longtime community advocate for immigration reform and immigrants, Kristin Mohrman’s career is dedicated to helping her clients navigate the complex and ever-changing immigration process. Kristin is experienced in complex removal defense, asylum, family petitions, adjustment of status, consular processing, waivers, VAWA, U, and T visas. Kristin is fluent in Spanish.
