Join the NSBA and Disability Rights Nebraska for a comprehensive overview of the things attorneys should know about Social Security Disability applications. This program will provide attendees with a primer on the difference between Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). We will review the relevance of client asset management plans, counseling clients on working while their applications are pending, and navigating health insurance during the application process. Finally, attendees will gain valuable insights into navigating the complexities of disability benefits law and fulfilling ethical responsibilities in counseling clients fully about these issues.

Michael J. Elsken worked for Disability Rights Nebraska starting 2002 through 2024. He has extensive knowledge of social security, assistive technology, and special education. He has been engaged in a broad range of activities for the agency on behalf of individuals with disabilities in the State of Nebraska, including: litigation in both the Federal and state court systems, participating in an array of Federal and state administrative proceedings, participation as a presenter in educational and training programs for individuals with disabilities, and for entities who supply services for individuals with disabilities. Disability Rights Nebraska is a nonprofit organization that advocates alongside of and on behalf of people with disabilities. Michael recently retired from practice.

Active Nebraska attorneys are required to complete 10 hours of continuing legal education (CLE) each year. Two of those 10 hours must be in the field of professional responsibility (ethics). Nebraska attorneys may claim only 5 hours of distance-learning CLE per year. Webinars viewed on this portal are considered distance-learning. Under the new MCLE reporting process, the NSBA will report your attendance for this program, which will be automatically updated into your transcript. The NSBA has 30 days to report your hours to Nebraska MCLE, and your transcript may not update immediately. You are no longer able to log your own hours in your transcript; they must be reported by the sponsor.
